The designer's toolkit

Project 1: Hierarchy and alignment

The brief is to create a poster for Outward Bound Adventures.

Research

Book: Layout for graphic designers by gavin Ambrose and Paul Harris.
Notes
Book: The advertising concept book by Pete Barry
These sketches show different layouts with good use of white space and effective, bold text that I will try to include in my poster.

Development

I started to develop two of my favourite thumbnails before moving onto the computer. However, as I moved the first design onto the computer I realised I didnt like the design and picked a different one to develop digitally.
Poster 1
I started with the Copperplate gothic bold typeface for the title Adventure Calls but I decided that I wasn't keen on a serif font for the main focus and the font was slightly too harsh for the poster design.

I changed the font to Battery park, which I think fits in better to the design and layout. I tried it in black and turned down the opacity to allow me to play around with layering the text on top of it. However, I found that it made the design quite dull so I opted to change it to the blue colour that is used in the given Logo for the company. I thought that this would help to draw the readers eye to the Logo at the bottom of the page.

I decided to use one of the images to create a textured background for the poster. The image I used was the tents in a field picture and I used the charcoal effect and turned down the opacity.

I struggled to incorporate a third image but then I decided to highlight the words explore the wild by using the clipping mask feature to put an image into the text.

I changed the image of the person climbing so that I could get a cleaner silhoutte for the final poster.
Poster 2
With this design I played around with the colours of the text and the typefaces along with the alignment to decide on the best layout for the poster. I have aimed this one more at the younger end of the target audience as I felt that my first design was catered more towards the older readers.

Developments

Splash 1
I started to develop this design because I liked the huge contrast between the black page and the white page. I tried to create the illusion that the text was floating off the page, like you would in space. However, the title in the middle of the page directs the eye to the image of mars.  I also liked the amount of white space that this design left.
Splash 2
I tried to create contrast with the colours red and green, however I couldn't get it to work the way I wanted.
Splash 3
I liked the asymmetry of this first development but I found it difficult to make the text work around it.
Splash 4
I enjoyed playing around with the image of the astronaut, with different effects and colours. I liked the blue and the green astronaut images to contrast the red/orange typeface. I ended up choosing the blue one because the colours contrasted better.
Turn 1
This turn page was to link to the second splash page as I used the green stripe to link the two spreads together. This design felt too simple and boring.

Typeface experiments

To start with I wanted to chose a main font for the company name to go on my app. I found a few typefaces that I liked on adobe fonts and then played around with them to connect the name with the subject matter.

Landing page

Development 1
This thumbnail was experimenting with symmetry and harmonious/ contrasting colours and deciding which effect I liked better. I think that the contrasting colours definitely do a better job of catching your eye than the harmonious ones.
Development 2
Development 3
I tried this thumbnail in both portrait and landscape to see which orientation fit the design better. I like the portrait design, however I liked my landscape product page so I knew I needed a landscape landing page.
