Layout
I have chosen to create a book that unfolds with loosely stitched together pages to create a patchwork effect - like the creatures body parts.
This design looks at the book unfolding into a mountain shape - as it is set in the alps - however, I think a more random/organic shape might be easier to create and better suited to the project. |

Ink text - Craig Ward inspired
I used black ink to replicate the typeface 'Garamond' and used a straw to blow water over the ink.

Final book
The first half of this book represents the romantic style of writing that is used in the first chapter of this book. It lulls the reader into a false sense of serenity, which is the opposite of what this story is about. I portrayed this through the use of a delicate serif typeface - Garamond, I used an old paper-like texture to create the feel of an old letter.
As it does in the novel, the atmosphere and tempo changes from romantic to adventure to delusion to anger and finally and ultimately to sadness.
I created all of these changes and constant back and forth, not only in emotions but in timeline, through mix-match typography and structured/random layouts. I wanted to show the rollercoaster that this heart wrenching story is, through typography and through the structure of the book itself. The book unfolds as you find out more of the story and when completely unfolded shows parts of the story mixed with other parts, which represents the patchwork of the monster's skin as well as the patchwork of the story told from 3 different perspectives.
The shape of the unfolded book creates the ambigious shape of the monster.
